They have been reported to be a serious menace to the paddy cultivation. In Maharashtra, it has been reported to cause heavy damage to paddy crop, in Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and parts of Pune district.
Marks of Identification:
Crabs belong to class Crustacea of phylum Arthopoda and bear 5 pairs of legs.

They cut the young paddy plants near ground level into small bits and carry them to their burrows for feeding. In an infested field bits of leaves and stem are seen floating on water. The pest is active at night. Besides this direct damage, they prepare a series of burrows in the embankment of paddy fields thus not allowing retention of water.
They are polyphagous species.
i) Prepare a poison bait.
ii) Endosulfan 35 EC 40 ml or
iii) Acephate 75 WP 75 gm or
iv) Carbaryl 50 WP 100 gm In 1 Kg cooked rice. Small pills are prepared & one pill is to be insertedin each burrow. This mixtures is enough for 100 burrows.
